In 1950s Mexico City, an American immigrant in his forties lives a lonely life in the middle of a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student leads the man to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Daniel Craig is ultimately the one who convinced Luca Guadagnino to play Drew Starkey after watching the audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him “That’s… is a friend” after seeing Starkey… William Lee: Sit on your ass! The main reason is that the film was too abstract and seemed like a stream of consciousness. The overall meaning is to explore the loneliness of a strange heart, the difficulty of connecting with others, the pain of not being able to love, and the complex emotions of depression. But the presentation technique is very close to stream of consciousness, especially the last 20 minutes, which have almost no lines and are entirely used to express the inner world of the male protagonist through various blurs, hallucinations, and abstract art forms. Even though I understood what the director wanted to express, the form of expression may not have been acceptable to the audience, and at one point I felt like leaving the stage.
